Acupuncture for Arthritis

Arthritis is the most common cause of disability in the older generation today. Statistics show that one of three Americans is affected with this disease. Most people believe that arthritis is normal as one gets older which is because most people over fifty show signs of arthritis such as pain in the joints and inflammation. What people don’t realize is that there is a way to reduce the symptoms of arthritis. Acupuncture and oriental medicines are great treatments one should look into to treat arthritis conditions.

What You Need to Know About Arthritis

What is arthritis exactly? Arthritis isn’t actually one disease, but a disorder that is made up of hundreds of symptoms that can affect a person of any age. The two most common types of arthritis are rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Although these two types are considered arthritis, they have completely different effects on the body as well as causes.

Type #1: Rheumatoid Arthritis
Info: Chronic inflammatory disorder that affects the tissues, organs, and synovium joints. When the joint lining is inflamed, this can cause swelling, redness, warmth, pain, stiffness, and even loss of movement in the joint. This condition is known as synovium.

Type #2: Osteoarthritis
Info: This is the most common type of arthritis effecting people throughout the world today. This condition started by breaking down joint cartilage which results in stiffness, swollenness, and pain. The joints that are commonly affected by this arthritis include the knees, spine, hips, ankles, elbows, wrists, shoulders, and fingers. If osteoarthritis develops in an uncommon joint, this is usually because of a past injury to this joint. Repetitive stress to a certain joint, such as lifting all day due to a job, will make you more prone to developing osteoarthritis later in life.

Studies have proven that the best way to relieve the effects of arthritis is through acupuncture techniques. A specific study involving over three thousand people with osteoarthritis was conducted in Germany in order to test the effects of acupuncture. One group had acupuncture sessions along with medical help while the other had no acupuncture done at all. The results were that the acupuncture group showed a much better improvement and had less pain than those who only stuck to standard medical treatments. If you have arthritis, then it is safe to say that you will feel a sudden improvement after three months of acupuncture sessions.

Acupuncture and Arthritis

In the East, people commonly refer to arthritis as bi syndrome. Acupuncturists treat arthritis by knowing which bi syndrome your type of arthritis is classified as. A bi syndrome can cause paint, redness, numbness, and soreness in the tendons, joints, and muscles. Below are the symptoms of the four types of bi syndromes.

Type #1: Stationary Bi Syndrome
Symptoms: Limbs will feel heavy, numb, or swell up. The pain usually sticks to a specific part of the joint and doesn’t affect and surrounding joints.

Type #2: Heat Bi Syndrome
Symptoms: The flesh surrounding the affected joint will feel hot, become swollen, or become red. Applying pressure to this area will cause a spike of pain.

Type #3: Moving Bi Syndrome
Symptoms: Physical sickness such as chills or a fever. Pain will not stick to one joint, but will jump around to other joints throughout the body.

Type #4: Painful Bi Syndrome
Symptoms: Intense pain in a certain part of the body. If a heating pad helps relieve this pain, then you would fall into this category. Be sure to avoid the cold at all costs.

The different types of bi syndromes will let the acupuncturist know which points they need to target during treatment to best heal your condition. The main point of acupuncture is to balance out the life energy in your body so that it is able to rid itself of any impurities or diseases. Acupuncture will increase the flow of this energy to stop inflammation, lessen swelling, relieve pain, and help prevent arthritis from coming back in the future.

Studies Show that Acupuncture Stops Headaches

Cochrane Researchers conducted two different studies to show that acupuncture is indeed an effective treatment for the prevention and treatment of migraines and headaches.

The goal of both studies was to discover if acupuncture is able to reduce how often headaches occur in a person. The first study was more focused on mild, yet frequent headaches while the second studied more chronic, yet less frequent headaches, or migraines. Both trials together involved over six thousand patients in total.

The studies lasted around eight weeks. The first showed that those who received acupuncture had fewer headaches than those who took standard pain medications. The second reported the same results.

In one case that involved about three hundred patients, acupuncture was shown to reduce headaches by as much as two hundred percent. These results initiated a similar test to be conducted for those who suffered chronic tension headaches. In this test the people involved were split up into three different groups over an eight week period. One group received no treatment, the second received minimal acupuncture (which is when needles don’t fully activate the point targeted), and the third received normal acupuncture. The group that received no treatment suffered one and a half fewer days of headaches, the minimal acupuncture group had around six and a half days of no headaches, and the full acupuncture group had a whole week of no headaches.

With each test done, more and more improvements were made. Each treatment reduced the chances of headaches from reoccurring more and more. Besides acupuncture, there are a variety of changes on can make to their lifestyle in help reduce and treat headaches, which can be seen below.

Change #1: Stress
Stress is the number one cause of tension headaches, so in order to rid this trigger is would be wise to look into relaxation techniques to help soothe the mind.

Change #2: Sleep
Sleep is more important than you think. We need at least eight hours of sleep per night in order to maintain proper functioning.

Change #3: Eat Healthy
Small, regular, healthy meals are what you need. If you aren’t eating properly, then your blood sugar can fall too quick which will result in a headache. Foods that induce headaches include red meats, salty refined foods, and alcohol.

Change #4: Healthcare Consultation
Make sure to consult with a healthcare specialist, such as an acupuncturist, in order to prevent headaches from reoccurring.

Change #5: Keep a Headache Journal
Keeping a headache journal will help your healthcare provider figure out the triggers of your headache as well as how to prevent them from happening.

Change #6: Exercise
Exercise is an important activity that benefits our body in many ways. It also releases endorphins, which are chemicals in the brain that help relieve stress.
