STUDY: ACUPUNCTURE RELIEVES MENSTRUAL PAIN
The 2008 issue of the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology reported on a German study that confirmed the effectiveness acupuncture had on menstrual pain in women.
This study had two hundred one participants, women of course, who were assigned to acupuncture or no acupuncture at random. The group that received acupuncture treatments reported a thirty percent improvement in the levels of their pain compared to those who only received standard treatments.
Dr Claudia Wiit of the University Medical Center in Berlin stated that “Patients with chronic menstrual pain that were treated with acupuncture showed significant improvements in pain intensity and quality of life compared to the patients who received standard care. Based on the results, acupuncture should be considered a viable option in the management of all patients affected by menstrual pain.”
The study was funded by social health insurance groups, which provides health insurance to over ten percent of the German population.
Acupuncture for Menopause
Menopause is the point in time when the menstrual cycle has ceased for one full year. At this time a woman will no longer be fertile. During the transition phase prior to menopause, which is known as perimenopause, estrogen circulating in the body can range from large amounts to to very little. This fluctuation can cause a wide variety of symptoms such as night sweats, dry skin, hot flashes, increased body weight, migraines, pain in the joints, memory loss, moodiness, fatigue, or insomnia. These symptoms can range from very mild to extremely severe.
Treatment with Traditional Chinese medicine including acupuncture and herbs will address the symptoms of perimenopause, and menopause which is also called the climacteric. These methods of treatment will target imbalances in the system in order to treat the symptoms associated with the patient. Each patient will each have a different set of symptoms, so it is only natural that the treatment will be unique to each person.
Acupuncture for Postpartum Recovery
Childbirth is a powerful event that every new parent remembers for the rest of their lives. That being said, the rigors of birth is exhausting, and can completely drain the new mother’s energy. Of course, energy is exactly what a new parent needs in order to take care of a child and survive the first days and weeks of the postpartum period. Postpartum acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine can help. Acupuncture treatment and other TCM methods will help a new mother through the first couple of months after childbirth by treating symptoms such as exhaustion, mastitis, post-operative healing, excessive lactation, low lactation, night sweats, postpartum depression, fatigue, and more. Acupuncturists will target points that help heal women physically, psychologically, and emotionally.
